anything can be

Listen to Mustn'ts, child, listen to the Don'ts.
Listen to the Shouldn'ts, the Impossibles, the Won'ts.
Listen to the Never Haves, then listen close to me.
Anything can happen, child, Anything can be.

all that glitters is not gold

In Venice, on the Grand Canal, in Peggy Guggenheim's former home the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, is the wonderful Peggy Guggenheim Collection. And in the courtyard of the museum is a Wish Tree.
If you came upon a Wish Tree,
what would you wish?
We should all set aside a Wish Tree
for granting all those important wishes.

but we know better

Victoria, BC
"Now, the world is more than it seems to be.
You know this, of course, because you read stories.
You understand that there is the surface and then there is all the things that glimmer and shift underneath it.
And you know that not everyone believes in those things, that there are people - a great many people -
who believe the world cannot be any more than what they can see with their eyes.

But we know better."

angry at a mirror

Any time you're angry at anything outside you, question it, because to be angry at a mirror is insane.

selected purposefully

During the course of my adult life, curators went from being lofty people who work in museums to hip people who select, interpret, and edit almost anything.

Curator: from the latin curare meaning to care for,
to attend to.

A curator is a manager or an overseer.
Nearly everyone can lay claim to the title, Curator.

I have been thinking about the creativity of curating... and the things I curate in my life... the way I sift and sort and purposefully select.  I am as much about what I include as I am about what I leave out.

Artist Raghava KK's most recent TED talk sums up curating beautifully:

"Creativity is the most important tool we have. It lets us create who we are and curate what is to come."

there's real poetry in the real world...

I posted about how I read the book Ignorance: How It Drives Science. And I keep thinking about dark corners and the possibility of black cats...

And then, on the 4th of July, the Higgs Boson particle was discovered (check out an easier to understand take on Minute Physics) and may have opened a new dark corner of subatomic science.

Then, I found this video and fell in love...

  • We are always at the brink of the known.
  • The story of humans is the story of ideas that shine light into dark corners.
  • Scientists love mysteries; they love not knowing.

There's real poetry in the real world...
and it's written in the language of questions.

Ode to Joy

This puts a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes every time I watch it.
I'm not exactly sure why... it's everything that's right with the world and creativity and humanity and life... all rolled into a flash Ode to Joy.

The event was sponsord by Spain’s Banco Sabadell. Featuring Vallès Symphony Orchestra, the choirs of Lieder and Friends of l’Opera and the Choral Belles Arts. It's conducted by Josef Vila Casañas.

be like water

“Nothing in the world is softer and weaker than water.
But for attacking the hard, the unyielding,
nothing can surpass it.
There is nothing like it.”

to try and to err

The only way to figure out what you want to be
— or more precisely, who you already are –
is to engage in a lifelong game of Trial and Error.
